Exploring Knowledge Processes in User-Centred Design
نویسنده
چکیده
This research focuses on analysing knowledge processes of the design process, especially the early phases of the design process that can be called concept design. It aims at developing a body of knowledge that builds on the relevant issues toward user-centred design in a form of a framework. This is intended to apply, organise and synthesise processes, theories and concepts from the separate but linked disciplines of knowledge management and humancomputer interaction, hence addressing one of the most essential topics and goals of system design, i.e. how to define what is needed in the system and how the system should mediate human activities—for the purposes of this research, in the context of interest-based communities and mobile technology. The framework is based on the following propositions: (1) The participants of design process include designers and users as actors, both of which are seen to possess knowledge needed toward successful design; (2) this knowledge is proposed to be context-specific, hence being specific for certain users using certain technology; (3) for the user as well as for the design professional there are some things that are known but have not been articulated; and (4) the knowledge processes transforming tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge by users and designers are linked and need to be combined, finally (5) toward knowledge embedded into concepts, products, or services. Overall, the research highlights how knowledge processes enable user involvement and capturing tacit (and novel) user knowledge toward successful concept design/design.

User Centred Design through the Keyhole: Video Design Case
This paper develops a design case format capable of engaging design practitioners and design students in reflective dialog about their user centred design practice. The core idea is to present project team experience as an open resource for reflection and learning. By exploring short snippets of video that document design team activities, designers are able to mirror and expand their own design...
متن کاملASSESSMENT OF USER- CENTRED DESIGN PROCESSES AS A BASIS FOR IMPROVEMENT ACTION An experimental study in industrial settings
Many software-intensive products and systems on the market today reveal a poor level of usability despite the availability of knowledge about how to develop good usability, namely user-centred design. Improving the status of user-centred design has proved to be a challenge in product development. An effective step to start out on the road to such improvements is to carry out a current state ana...
متن کاملDesigning an enhanced web user experience : the use of 'emotional probes' as a user-centred methodology for designing emotionally-engaged web interaction
Exploring the balance of aesthetics and usability in Web design to enhance user experience, we use an effective, intimidate method to understand user emotions in Web site interaction. “Emotional Probes” (EPs), combining rapid ethnographic surveys with the Cultural Probes (CPs) approach, can enhance designers’ understanding of user emotional engagement with web design. The dominant user experien...
متن کاملThe improvement of human - centred processes c facing the challenge and reaping the benefit of ISO 13407
Human-centred design processes for interactive systems are de"ned in ISO 13407 and the associated ISO TR 18529. The publication of these standards represents a maturing of the discipline of user-centred design. The systems development community see that (at last) Human Factors has processes which can be managed and integrated with existing project processes. This internationally agreed set of h...
متن کاملImplementing learner-centred design: The interplay between usability and instructional design practices
Emerging requirements for designing interactive systems are characterized by the increased focus on users, their idiosyncratic characteristics and reactions and their changing needs (Hudlicka, 2003). The user is in the centre of the process and his/her needs drive the nature of the interface and the allocation of tasks between the user and the computer. Human-centred design (HCD) is concerned w...
